I'm James, a photographer living in Chicago.

Over a decade ago I started shooting bands in the music scene of interior Alaska. I've played in several bands, recorded others, and spent years involved in DIY, house shows, community festivals, basement sets, dive bars, campus theatres, and music venues. For a while I ran No Culture with a few friends in Columbus, Ohio, a YouTube channel filming live performances of local and touring bands in a basement.

My background informs how I shoot. I’ve been on the other side of the camera, it's a familiar place. I’m after the feel of being in the room, the momentum of the performance and energy of the stage, not just a photo of a person holding a guitar.
